In our last post, we covered the free preventive health screenings that every qualified health plan must provide for all adults. In addition to those services, qualified health plans must also offer certain types of care for select groups. This means that if you’re a certain age or are at risk for certain diseases and illnesses, you qualify for the following free healthcare screenings and services.
If you’ve ever smoked, then you can get an abdominal aortic aneurysm one-time screening.
If you’re at a higher risk for cholesterol or if you’re a certain age, then you can get a cholesterol screening.
If you’re over 50 years old, then:
– your aspirin costs are covered to prevent cardiovascular disease and
– colorectal cancer screening is covered as well.
If you have high blood pressure, then you can get Type 2 Diabetes screening.
If you’re at a higher risk for chronic disease, then you can get diet counseling.
If you’re at risk for Hepatitis B, then you can get screened for it.
If you’re between 15-65 years old, then you’re eligible for a free HIV screening.
If you’re a heavy smoker or have quit smoking in the past 15 years and are between the ages of 55-80, then you can get lung cancer screening.
If you’re at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), then you can get STI prevention counseling.
If you’re at risk for syphilis, then you’re eligible for syphilis screening.
If you use tobacco, then you can get Tobacco Use Screening and access to interventions to help you quit.
And if you have a uterus and/or breasts, then you also have access to special preventive care as well. We’ll do a comprehensive overview of these services in a following post.
If your health insurance plan’s coverage started before the Affordable Care Act took effect and you want access to all of these preventive care services, then maybe it’s time you started shopping around for a different health provider. Luckily, your plan renews annually and you can change it starting November 1st during Open Enrollment. You might end up saving money, like our client Michaela when she changed her health insurance plan.
